Talcum powder is sourced from talc, a hydrated magnesium silicate mineral with the chemical formula Mg₃Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂. This mineral is formed through intricate metamorphic processes occurring within ultramafic rock formations. The geological genesis involves high pressure and high-temperature conditions that induce a transformation in the mineral composition of peridotite and serpentinite rocks, leading to the gradual crystallization of talc into its characteristic soft, platy structure.
Extraction methods predominantly employ open-pit or underground mining techniques. Post-extraction, the raw talc ore undergoes a sophisticated multi-stage refinement process. It contributes to the creation of a smooth, matte finish on the skin while also preventing skin irritation caused by chafing. Within the manufacturing sector, talc serves as a functional filler in plastics, rubber, and ceramics.
